Tools of the Trade: Line Art and Inking |
Hello again furry artists! In this tutorial I will show you my basic tools that I use to create my hand drawn works of yiffy goodness :P Good tutorial for beginning artists ^^

A- My home made toothpick dip pen
I use this to ink those extremely fine lines. I made it quick, easy, and free from a wooden dowel i had laying around. You can make one from pretty much any bit of wood about the thickness of a pen or pencil by cutting it to a good length for you and drilling a hole in one end just big enough for the toothpick piece to fit snuggly into. Break the toothpick about three quarters long and insert that piend into the end of the pen and your ready to start inking ^^ Remember, it's for very fine lines, so you don't want too much ink on the end at a time. You can also sharpen the toothpick to a finer tip with a sanding board.
B- An 07 sized tip ball point gel pen
This type of pen is excellent for inking the thicker lines. The gel ink doesn't run or bleed, making the inked line art look very smooth.
C- An 05 sized tip ball point gel pen
This is for inking the finer lines in the line art. Fine detail can be achieved with this tip. Again, The gel ink doesn't run or bleed, making the inked line art look very smooth.
D- A .03 sized mechanical pencil
This is for making the thicker lines in the work before inking, But I mainly use this when making a sketch that won't be inked. .7 size can also work well for this purpose ^^
E- A .5 sized mechanical pencil
Same purpose as the larger sizes but for the finer lines. This is my primary drawing tool. It's what I start all of my pics with.
F- A bottle of black india ink
This is obviously for the toothpick dip pen :P It doesn't run or bleed much however if you have too much on the tip of the pen it can blotch. Not a problem if the line art is going into a graphic program, but it's not good for an in person commission, so watch the tip of the pen carefully for a forming drop of ink.
G- Toothpicks
For tipping the dip pen ^^ Remember, break the toothpick and use the longer end, I use about three quarters of the length but you might find a shorter or longer length more suiting.
H- A kneaded eraser
I use this to erase in between the pencil lines I want to keep. Just form it into a point and you can easily clean up your line art.
I- A super soft eraser
I use this to clean the pencil away from my inked lineart. Make sure that the ink is dry before you erase anything.
J- A gum eraser
I use this to erase while drawing my pencil lineart. You don't have to press very hard with this one at all and it erases quite well, even the darker lines.
K- A sanding or grit board
I use this to sharpen my pencils and toothpick dip pen tips for a finer edge. A diagonal edge works best for me.
L- A comic page stencil
I used to use this to make borders for comic pages. Its good to have a few stencils handy if your just getting started.
M- A protractor
This helps me makes perfect curves and small straight lines. I mainly use it for dynamics, which is putting things in perspective or adding depth to line art.
N- A comic ruler
This is what I use to make comic pages now> It's a comic ruler I made from a piece of store rack trim. I have no idea where to get that though. Try looking for something that you can slip the edge of the paper into to evenly make the comic page border as well as straight lines.
O- Blank computer paper
I use plain old computer or printing paper for all of my hand drawn pics. It's cheap and easy to work with.
P- A clipboard art case
This is what I've been drawing my furry art on since I started drawing furry art back in highschool :P It has a clipboard on top and space for paper and my pens and pencils and erasers inside. I got it from Wall-mart and it's done me good so far.
Of course all you really need are a pen, pencil, and a piece of paper. These items just make the work much faster and easier. And if you can make something that makes your work easier, then thats great ^^
If you think you suck at drawing but still want to draw, get a piece of paper and a pencil and practice till your better at it, then do some free commissions until you get even better, then you can start doing commissions for money and fund yourself better. Practice is the only way to get better at anything.
Thats all for now guys, Keep an eye out for more tutorials ^^
